I grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, the only flute player in a family of string players.  I started music instruction at the age of 5 on piano, and flute at age 9.   As a teenager, I was a concerto soloist with the Avanti Orchestra, the MCYO orchestra, and was principal flute in multiple orchestras, both community and youth orchestra.  As a  member of the Sewanee Summer Festival orchestra,  I played under such conductors as Louis Lane, Werner Torkanowsky and Frederick Fennell.  I began my college music studies  at Smith College, where I performed frequently with faculty, and studied with the composer Alvin Etler.  Due to family difficulties, I had to withdraw and go to school local to the DC area, so attended  the Catholic University of America Rome School of Music, and then was awarded my B.M in flute performance from the University of Maryland School of Music.   My principal teachers were  William Montgomery, Britt Johnson, and Thomas Nyfenger, and I had the honor to perform in masterclasses for William Bennett, William Montgomery, Bernie Goldberg, and Thomas Nyfenger.   I also played in  the International Festival Orchestra at Round Top under Leon Fleisher, the Washington Sinfonia, for the Washington Ballet, the Roanoke Symphony as well as freelancing and performing on numerous recital series in the DC metropolitan region.  Then I took a long hiatus while I raised my children, and focused less on classical music and more on the non-classical genres.  I have been in demand in the genres of klezmer, Irish, jazz, and  in various folk crossover bands, as well as being being featured on several recordings.    In recent years I was the principal flute with the Landon Symphonette, and was the feature soloist several times.  I continue to play on local recital series while maintaining a studio of highly competitive students.  My students are in all the local youth orchestras, all county, all state bands, and are seen placing frequently in solo competitions.   This last year both the principal first flute in the All State Senior Orchestra and the All State Senior band were my students, and both first chairs of the Montgomery County honors bands were my students.   I also adjudicate for solo competitions and coach  ensembles and sectionals.  A list of student accomplishments can be viewed on the Home page of this website.
